Shanta Golba is a key cooperative within the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU), one of Ethiopia’s most prominent exporting organizations. The SCFCU is a robust network comprising 53 member cooperatives and over 80,000 member households across the Sidama Zone. Shanta Golba, like other cooperatives in the union, plays a vital role in supporting small-scale coffee producers by offering training in organic farming practices and investing in essential infrastructure such as road improvements and local warehouses. The SCFCU also emphasizes establishing certification processes, providing micro-credit, and implementing social programs that benefit the broader community, including environmental training, healthcare initiatives, life insurance, and educational opportunities for coffee producers and their families.
Founded in 1976, Shanta Golba operates in the Bensa district, with 1,267 farmer members who typically cultivate less than a hectare of coffee each. The cooperative is unique within Sidama for producing natural process coffees, which require significant investment in drying space and labor to ensure the coffee cherries are properly processed. Once dried, the coffee is milled for export at the Union mill in Addis Ababa. The formation of cooperative unions like SCFCU in the late 1990s transformed the Ethiopian coffee industry, allowing cooperatives like Shanta Golba to gain voting power, higher farm returns, and access to certifications that protect prices and enhance marketing, thus securing a place for smallholders in the global marketplace.
This natural process coffee offers sweet fruit flavors of peach, spice with hints of floral notes.
