Renowned for its unique character, some of the world's most famous coffee is produced on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Atypical geography, terroir, and processing methods all contribute to the bold, earthy flavors evident in Sumatran coffee. Roasted medium dark, this coffee boasts a heavy body with chocolate, nut, spice, and herbal flavors.
Our Sumatra offerings are grown by small-scale producers in northern Sumatra who often sell their coffee as part of a regional cooperative. Most growers depulp their coffee on their farms before selling it to a middle-man who processes the coffee in the traditional Indonesian style called wet-hulled or Giling Basah. This processing method is one of the main reasons for the unique profile of Sumatran coffees. In fact, Indonesia is the only origin in the world that processes its coffee this way.
This rich, full-bodied coffee is perfect for a french press. View our french press recipe and our brewing instructions to learn more.
